3 Tips for Overcoming Writer’s Block

So-called writer’s block often comes down to using the wrong approach. Here are some tips to get you writing fast:

  1. Avoid scribble and scratch — where you write a few words, write a few more, then go back to the first words to fix them. This approach will lower your confidence and take you ten times longer.  Just write, then go back and edit later.
  2. Write fast. It saves you time and energy and makes you more creative. Your brain is wired to move fast.
  3. Recognise that your first draft is just that—the first draft of several. Accept that it’s not up to scratch—first drafts never are. Remember Hemingway re-wrote the ending to Farewell to Arms 39 times, so you’re in good company. Good writing requires lots of rewriting.
